Aliro is a new industry-standard protocol for digital access credentials, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), the same organization behind Matter.

It is designed to make digital keys work seamlessly across different devices, wallets, and access control systems, similar to how Matter simplifies smart home connectivity.

Aliro allows:

1. Support for Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet credentials through a common standard.
2. Reduced need for ecosystem-specific integrations.
3. Easier credential sharing and management.
4. Future compatibility across multiple smart home and access control platforms.

Thread is a low-power, wireless networking protocol designed for smart home devices.

In simple terms: it lets devices like lights, locks, and sensors communicate directly with each other in a secure, reliable, and energy-efficient way—without relying solely on Wi-Fi.

It’s often used with Matter, because Thread creates a fast, mesh network that makes Matter devices more responsive and reliable.

Matter-over-Thread required means that a device must connect using Matter on a Thread network to function properly.

In simpler terms:

The device cannot work over Wi-Fi alone.

It relies on Thread’s low-power mesh network for communication.

To pair a smart device with Matter, your smart home platform (Apple, Alexa, Google, SmartThings app) and a Thread Border Router (a smart speaker or hub that needs to supports Thread, please conform with your smart home platform).

Starting with iOS 18, iPhones can directly add and control Matter devices in Apple Home without requiring a HomePod or Apple TV during setup.

iPhone models with a built-in Thread radio, including iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and newer Pro models, can directly add Matter-over-Thread devices.
A Thread Border Router (such as HomePod mini, HomePod 2, or Apple TV 4K) is still recommended for optimal performance and network reliability.

Matter-compatible smart locks are very secure.

In simple terms: they use strong encryption to protect your data, and all communication between your lock, phone, and smart home system is private and verified, so only authorized users can unlock it.

Think of it like a digital lock with a secret handshake that only trusted devices know.
